ABSTRACT

The process of career exploration and career counseling has evolved in professional counseling. There is a greater emphasis on integrating both professional goals with personal lifestyle goals. Counselors who specialize in career counseling found that the field changed and needed additional engagement to meet clients’ needs. S. Neary found that career counselors reentering the field required postgraduate professional development to reconnect with changes in the field. Many counselors highlighted their value of balance, support, helping, and honesty within their careers and recognized the need for these to prevent burnout and increase compassion satisfaction in their career. The areas that counselor professionals have to address throughout their own career development varies from awareness of the personal impacts, as well as incorporating the changing world and role of the counselor and the demands placed on professional counselors. The field emphasizes the need for career counselors to help clients find their own place and path.
