ABSTRACT

Counselor professional identity includes being trained specifically in counselor education in preparation to hold related licenses and certifications, as well as interacting with others in the field through professional activities and organizations. Counseling and Related Educational Programs standards indicate that accredited counselor education programs must have at least three full-time core faculty members who hold doctorates in counselor education and maintain licensure and certifications, as well as membership in professional organizations. Being mentored by counselor educators as they demonstrate strong professional identity is a unique and important part of counselor trainee experience. Membership and involvement in professional organizations is another important aspect of counselor professional identity. The American Counseling Association is arguably the largest organization that works to improve the professional identity of counselors. There are many advantages to being an active member of professional organizations. C. S. Cashwell et al. indicated professional identity is a culmination of membership, education, licensure and credentials, and service and leadership.
