ABSTRACT

Beginning in the 1980s, a line of thought that aimed to implement theories and practices of urban planning in accordance with market-based logic became hegemonic within the field in which the city is produced. This chapter seeks to analyze different forms of logic and strategy used by the principal subjects who, in embracing this worldview, joined together in pro-growth coalitions structured around the production of sporting mega-events. Logan and Moloch’s growth-machine theory was used as a methodological tool. A more ample pattern of collaboration between public and private agents in these pro-growth coalitions can also be observed in the links between such coalitions and the production of sport spectacle. However, certain patterns only become evident by observing this pro-mega-event coalition specifically, whereas other patterns seem to materialize only in certain territories, thereby revealing how variations can be affected by place.
