Defining ‘abuse'

This chapter sets out the aims of this book, starting with an analysis of what is meant by ‘domestic abuse’ and how definitions and understandings have evolved over time. It will look at research on the ‘gendered’ nature of domestic abuse and argue the importance of understanding ‘who does what to whom’ when formulating and implementing legal responses.
