ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 serves as the outline for the rest of the book. The election of Donald Trump and the narrow victory for ‘Leave’, both of which took place in 2016 and in modern and apparently well-off liberal economic societies with healthy democracies (as compared to somewhere in Eastern Europe or a weak Latin American country) shook the political-economic elites in both countries, and across the globe. Much has been written about these political shocks to the Western world and the concern of the ‘end of democracy’ as we know it. Our work seeks to contextualize this conversation in the political-economic, societal and business/corporate worlds, drawing information, data, real-life experiences and models of thought from all three, and the visionary thinking of Joseph Cadbury from the late 1800s.
