ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 explores the various suggestions and actions by academics, billionaires and ordinary citizens in the US and Britain that may be illustrative of how close, or far, these societies are from fulfilling the humanitarian vision of Joseph Cadbury and ensuring that Settlers are valued members of their societies. This chapter examines the comments and solutions put forward by authors including Robert Putnam, Yuval Levin, Charles Murray and others in the areas of government, education, the role of ‘elites’, the re-development of community and activism. In addition to the theoretical research, this chapter highlights the on-the-ground conversations held across the US by Mark Zuckerberg and the ‘Changing Europe’ initiative at University College London as first steps in an attempt in both countries to understand the real issues of real people, and bring these people with diverse and at times divergent thoughts together to better understand one another.
