ABSTRACT

This chapter applies the author’s unique DARE model to help readers understand where they are on the road to developing empathic influencing. It includes practical and fun exercises for each stage. First, there are individual ‘memory lane’, psychometric and feedback exercises to help you understand your own difference. Second, there are pen portraits, questions and ‘perspective-taking’ exercises to develop awareness of your own emotions and how they may differ from those of other people. Third, there are listening and observing assignments to build your recognition of exactly how other people may be different from you. Fourth and finally, there are strategies for becoming more effective, such as ‘taking a helicopter view’, ‘naming the process’ and clearly stating your intentions. Wherever you stand on the DARE developmental path, you will find ideas for improving your authentic leadership skills in this chapter.
