ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a final essential concept and key factor in empathic influencing: trust. This lies at the heart of authentic leadership. Trust supplies the certainty that the human brain craves and triggers the release of oxytocin, a chemical that creates positive feelings for others, thus promoting empathy and even more authentic leadership. High-trust organisations perform better and are more enjoyable places to work than low-trust organisations. As well as developing empathic influencing, the DARE model also serves to build trust and positive relationships at work and at home, creating high-performance teams and leading to good work–life balance. In summary, authentic leaders who DARE can complete this virtuous circle of trust and empathy and have a significant impact, not just on their own careers but on the world as a whole.
