ABSTRACT

This chapter turns the ethical beam onto us as individuals. It begins by describing the coherent ethical system that is part of the Greek legacy to us and the absolute essentiality of self-examination and self-awareness.

The key foundations to ethics are explained, such as happiness, the soul, virtuous choices, what makes a good life and ethical principles. We then discuss the broad definitions of ethics and morality and distinguish the two as being different concepts. We also discuss the ethics-morality gap – why it is that we do not do what we so often intend or want to do – and the challenging issue of moral relativism. The chapter concludes with what the implications are for being an ethical manager.
