ABSTRACT

Ross Baird, who funds and provides technical support to social entrepreneurs through Village Capital, knows that someone addressing an important problem with a good idea can still be successful even if he or she doesn’t have any business experience; but they must be surrounded by a strong team. The best classrooms provide a safe space to discuss history, analyze music, conduct scientific experiments, and create – anything from poems, to computer code, to ideas for social ventures. Students who band together effectively as classmates to address real problems are, more or less, a haphazard collection of people working toward a common end. Well-defined roles and responsibilities are imperative for any organization wanting to use its resources well, create a difference, and endure. But populating the organization chart too quickly can create problems.
