ABSTRACT

Kevin Starr, who has thought deeply about how to support and invest in social entrepreneurs, puts it succinctly. He points to the example of Living Goods, an organization to which the Mulago Foundation, which Starr directs, has given more than $1.5 million in unrestricted grants in less than a decade. Living Goods uses a network of local women to provide public health education, diagnose diseases, and sell life-saving drugs, to combat malaria and diarrhea, as well as other disease-preventing products, including water filters and fortified food. According to Living Goods’ website, randomized control studies have shown that child mortality has been reduced by 27% and the sale of fake medications has dropped by 50% thanks to its efforts. On top of this, Living Goods is creating good jobs for the health promoters they hire.
