ABSTRACT

A quick gloss on social entrepreneurs as managers: most aren’t eager or experienced; the tools that might support them aren’t readily available; and they can join networks where members provide mutual support through advice and shared services. Effective managers pay attention to more than results, insisting also on fair pay and focusing on the well-being of staff and teams. Less organic, ready-made support systems are available, as well, including Taproot, which designs and offers pro bono programs in which skilled volunteers offer their services to mission-driven organizations online, and face-to-face in major US cities. These services cover business needs such as human resource management, accounting, marketing, as well as strategic planning, and IT. Running a business overseas would be easier if the laws of physics didn’t prevent you from being two places at once.
