ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of assessment in the multiage classroom. Identifying appropriate assessment strategies is explored. Understanding the differences between traditional evaluations (such as tests, grades, rubrics, and report cards) as accountability measures, and the authentic assessment tools (which value the development of every child) used in multiage education is crucial. Traditional tools do not fit within a child-centered, multiage approach. Characteristics of both traditional evaluation and multiage authentic assessment, along with portfolios, are examined. Guidelines for a narrative report card are included. This chapter shows how authentic assessment across whole child learning is integrated into the daily routine of process strategies for the benefit and well-being of all children, respecting the individuality of each child. Conflicts which arise from trying to fit inappropriate assessment with multiage classrooms are addressed.
