ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the laws dealing with the prevention of pollution in the US, including the Ports and Waterways Safety Act and the Tank Vessel Act. It focuses on the implementation of MARPOL under the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, and the structural and operational requirements for pollution prevention under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. The chapter also covers the regulation of hazardous materials under the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act, the prevention of air pollution under the US Clean Air Act, and aquatic invasive species and ballast water management.
