ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how Corpus Linguistics (CL) methods can provide us with insights into how vocabulary is used in a corpus. It offers useful insights into the vocabulary found in a corpus and discusses ways in which the lexical component of a corpus can contribute to our understanding of how speakers have used vocabulary in distinct ways. The chapter uses a corpus of peace treaties to examine the relevance of education in these treaties and tries to illuminate how education and possible related concepts are conceptualised in these documents. It looks at children's fiction and tries to showcase some CL methods that can be used to research textual data. The chapter looks at keyword analysis as a powerful method that can reveal aspects of language use that might go unnoticed without the use of statistical inference. Keyword analysis provides a different route into the content of a corpus, not necessarily rooted in frequency.
