ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the spoken language and interviews, and offers insights into how usage can be relevant when analysing talk. It examines the ways in which one can look at talk by operating more complex corpus searches. The chapter queries a text version of the corpus that was transcribed and annotated following the Text Encoding Initiative guidelines. In order to illustrate how Corpus Linguistics methods can be used together with more complex searches, the chapter uses a corpus of interviews with professionals across Europe: the Backbone Corpus of English as a Lingua Franca. It also explores the use of complex queries when consulting corpora. There is a wide range of possibilities when it comes to searching for information in a corpus. Simple searches will be operationalised as searches of words, strings of words, lemmas or part-of-speech tags. More complex searches will require to combine several of these elements.
