ABSTRACT

This book provides practical introduction to the use of corpus linguistics (CL) methods in education research. It presents an entry-level research guide to the world of corpus linguistics for those who do not necessarily have a linguistic background or have not used corpora before. The book bridges the gap between educational research, admittedly a massively diverse area of practice, and corpus linguistics, a very specific area with a huge potential to become a useful set of research methods across a variety of disciplines. It provides an account that takes stock of the mainstream quantitative tradition in corpus linguistics, while presenting opportunities for collaboration and mixed-methods research to emerge. Sequential CL methods were mainly used when corpora were devised as the main research data collection method. CL methods can help educational researchers with the triangulation and validation of their research: triangulation of methods and also of datasets, as well as validation of results and an evaluation of researcher bias.
