ABSTRACT

Every librarian can take measures to reinvent or reinvigorate their career, even if they are not ready to leave their current job. From scouring job ads to cross-training with other departments, there are many ways to find and acquire new skills. Many tutorials for in-demand skills can be found freely online with a little bit of digging. Librarians should make a plan for themselves by compiling a list of skills or experience they need, and then determine where they can gain that knowledge. By making such a plan, the librarian will be prepared for the next job or promotion down the line. This chapter suggests ways to explore the profession such as reading about trends, looking at job postings, and keeping up with the professional literature. At work, the librarian can explore cross-training, study the library’s new initiatives, and take steps to customize their job.
