ABSTRACT

The job search is a stressful time, even when not applying to a different type or size of library. Preparing materials for submission to a job ad can be a source of anxiety and confusion. Librarians applying to a new type of library may not know what is expected of them as they work on their curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé. Additionally, interviews can vary widely depending on the type or size of library. It can be difficult for librarians to know what is standard if they are departing from their previous experience. Extra preparation at the outset can help librarians know what to expect and how they will be evaluated throughout the application and interview process. This chapter discusses each part of the résumé or CV and contains sample cover letters that show how to customize for each job. This chapter also gives advice for job interviews including contextualizing your past in a different environment. It gives tips for laying the groundwork for your future career moves, such as how to keep your application documents up to date. The chapter also shares tips from interviewees who have management and hiring experience. It concludes with questions for reflection.
