ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 is a case study of title designer Jack Cole’s sequence for the television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974) divided into four sections that address the different parts of this design. Its self-conscious invocation of realist form in cinema common to both narrative and avant-garde films in the 1960s is an introductory survey of the relationships between the subjective, objective realist modes. Each section in this chapter develops a detailed, theoretically informed close reading of the three discrete sections in this design
