ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 focuses on proclitics and the clitic group composed of the proclitic plus the host, i.e., the Type B clitic group, in the Fuzhou dialect. It is shown that similar to enclitics in this dialect, Fuzhou proclitics also share common morphosyntactic and phonological properties with clitics across languages. In this chapter, I examine the application and blocking of TS, FC, and CL within the Type B clitic group domain and demonstrate that TS and FC obligatorily apply between the proclitic and the host, while CL is obligatorily blocked. Although Type B and Type A clitic groups exhibit different phonological behavior in terms of the application of these three rules, I argue that the clitic group in the Fuzhou dialect as a whole can be distinguished from the prosodic word and the phonological phrase. The application/blocking of TS, FC, and CL is actually affected by different factors in these three morphosyntax-based prosodic domains. The clitic group hence should be established as an indispensable prosodic constituent in this dialect. I also discuss the violation of the SLH within the Type B clitic group, based on which I argue again for a slight weakening of the SLH in the theory of prosodic phonology.
