ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 covers several different topics pertaining to the political psychology of terrorism and illustrates these concepts with examples of a variety of terrorist groups. It draws on many psychological concepts theories and case studies to discuss terrorism at the individual and group levels. At the individual level, the chapter examines whether there is a terrorist personality, and also addresses specific personality attributes such as individual traits and motivations for joining terrorist groups. At the group level, it examines intragroup-level factors such as terrorist recruitment, indoctrination, conformity, obedience, group conflict, role, and social control.
