ABSTRACT

There is an important difference between an “expert” and a “professional.” An expert utilizes their knowledge of a subject to see the application of facts and circumstances to various alternative solutions or outcomes. This chapter discusses the important considerations that a lawyer should take into account in order to achieve a fulfilling life in law practice and meet the expectations of the profession. The aspiration to insert the lawyer’s character into every professional encounter is the foundation of a values-driven law practice and alignment of the lawyer’s life goals with their legal ambitions. Several factors are critical to the successful application of this approach. First, the lawyer must be diligent and competent in thoroughly mastering the law and facts as presented to them by the client. Second, the lawyer needs to set the frame of representation and access their intuitive character to predict a positive outcome that will guide the lawyer’s actions consistent with the lawyer’s values.
