ABSTRACT

Law firms, companies or government offices also impose policies, rules or requirements regarding acceptable practices and conduct. The consequences of violations of these rules may result in sanctions, including prohibition or suspension of the right to practice law. Legal ethics should not be seen as a minimum standard to be compromised in pursuit of a lawyer’s personal goals or the demands of a client or others that seek to override values to accomplish goals that violate defined values. As part of the bar admissions process, bar examiners include knowledge of the legal ethics and a character review as part of the bar examination and licensing process. The key is a consistent expectation that the balance can be maintained and that clients, colleagues, judges and other constituencies can find a common basis for resolving issues with a balanced, clearly communicated blend of these three elements: ethics, values and business.
