ABSTRACT

The leadership of social enterprises, says this chapter, is transforming conditions in countries ranging from Colombia to Kenya, Ghana to Uganda, Afghanistan to Jamaica. The chapter tells case stories in detail from each of these countries and highlights the sense of social conscience and engagement behind these initiatives, driven by a young leadership of integrity. The chapter also outlines the world’s major social enterprise movements such as Ashoka, based in Washington DC, and the annual Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship in Oxford. Such social enterprises, says Tony Bradley, a senior professor at Liverpool Hope University, are the “furry animals in the undergrowth”, scurrying around under the feet of “dinosaur corporations”.
