ABSTRACT

This chapter revisits the financial crash of 2007–2008 in summary and evaluates its devastating impact on the world, from which it is only just recovering. According the World Bank, the crash led to a 20 per cent drop in world trade and threw 100 million people into poverty. The chapter also looks at the impact of the mis-selling of Payment Protection Insurance in the UK which has further undermined the public’s trust in banking. The author tells the case story of the HBOS whistleblower Paul Moore, who became a public figure after exposing the mismanagement of Halifax Bank of Scotland, and who was vindicated for his stance for a leadership of integrity. The author quotes a number of sources who declare that there is still much work to be done in restoring the public’s trust in the global banking system.
