ABSTRACT

In the third chapter, some key risk factors that may potentially inform risk assessments in relation to adolescents’ aggression and violence within the family will be covered. Factors such as stressful life events, mental health problems, having a diagnosis of a neurodevelopmental disorder (e.g., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and intellectual disability), substance misuse (e.g., drugs and alcohol), and nature (genetics) versus nurture (environmental) debate on violence and aggression are drawn upon in the discussion. This chapter also includes discussion on the social information processing theory to explain how children and adolescents may process their cognitive and emotional information while interacting with others and how aggressive young people differ in this information processing.
