ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces the ideas and mechanisms for resilience in project management and provides with insights into how adversity can jeopardise project performance. It looks at weaknesses with current thinking in project management and how project managers can develop a state of awareness and responsiveness – an art to be mindful – in the face of adversity. The book offers a glimpse into our tendencies to be mindless in the face of uncertainty and complexity. It aims to distinguish between two archetypes of project management by exploring one of the most puzzling defeats in modern military history. The book looks at the question of how to make sense of epistemic uncertainty and how to judge it.
