Governments Gutting Their Holdings

Nineteenth-century conservationists who were concerned about the loss of Ontario’s trees should have wondered not at the ways of Providence but at the ways of their governments, who had done everything in their power to raze the primeval forests. When the above poem was penned, government policies had propelled more than a century of forest destruction. ²
