ABSTRACT

In 2014, writing in the New York Review of Books, Martin Filler denounced Hadid for her denial of moral responsibility and lack of remorse for the deaths on building sites for the 2022 World Cup, in which her Al-Wakrah Stadium is an essential component. This chapter raises the ensuing controversy to illustrate the way the iconic architecture industry manipulates the geographical, political and cultural distance of its transnational operations to secure the fake autonomy and complicity of architects, and divest the starchitect of moral responsibility.
