ABSTRACT

The second genre comes in the form of a mesmeric Loop infatuated with its own digital genius: inspired by advanced infrastructure and generated by complex computer algorithms that produce the illusion of a self-enclosed continuous surface, the Loop evokes an endless circulation coinciding with the endless circulation of the digital image, which insulates the spectator from thought just as it perpetuates the myth of limitless capital. This chapter theorises Rem Koolhaas’s CCTV tower, among other examples, as a gravity-free computer model or hologram holding the subject in its thrall via the ceaseless digital circuit that guarantees the heavenly transcendence the spectator longs for.
