ABSTRACT

The first chapter of the book deals with colonialism, anti-colonial nationalism and the post-colonial world in continuum. When imperialism was undergoing its colonial phase, European states were at the centre of world politics. After assessing the nature of British, French and Portuguese colonialism, it analyses intellectual responses to colonialism from thinkers/leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Frantz Fanon and Amilcar Cabral. While dealing with post-colonial states in Africa, it demonstrates how such states had to constantly reconcile between African communitarian traditions, different religious faiths and modern ideologies like socialism. The chapter demonstrates how the colonial past mediates with the present and shapes the future of African countries.
