ABSTRACT

Designing for learning focuses on the sequencing of learning events, the decision as to the evaluation strategy to use, and the incorporation of learning principles to maximize learning and transfer. In Chapter 7 the focus is on instructional methods and techniques by describing the variety of ways in which learning content can be delivered. The chapter is divided into three major sections. The first section discusses the traditional approach to delivery – instructor led with learners present in a classroom type setting. With face-to-face instruction, this section discusses and provides best practice evidence regarding improving the effectiveness of lectures, discussion, demonstration, practice, and feedback. The second section describes the use of simulated work equipment and a setting where learners practice technical as well as more softer skills. The third section examines the variety of delivery platforms that are based on rapid advances in learning technologies such as virtual reality, serious games and intelligent tutoring systems. In addition, the section describes delivery options for workplace learning such as mobile learning that are rapidly expanding as a function of technologies that allow for much more sophisticated learning platforms. Nevertheless, it is noted that how technological capabilities are used in creative ways to facilitate learning is more critical than the technical capabilities themselves
