ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by explaining why the cover letter is an important part of the application package. It discusses how to craft a letter that is as strong and convincing as possible. There are a number of simple strategies for writing cover letters that will help ensure a strong, compelling message. A few sentences in a cover letter can help explain gaps in employment and highlight student’s dedication to museums and the non-profit cultural sector. The cover letter is a perfect place to demonstrate student’s eagerness and ability to contribute to the mission of the museum. The cover letter is not the only correspondence students need to prepare. As they proceed with their search, students can expect to write requests for informational meetings and thank they notes, as well as acceptance and rejection letters. When writing a thank they or acceptance letter, students may use the person’s first name, especially if they were encouraged to do so.
