ABSTRACT

This chapter is intended to address the questions and concerns of international students seeking museum opportunities in the United States. International interns can learn on-site by conducting informational interviews with staff, attending public museum programs, and taking advantage of opportunities to assist with donor events. The chapter highlights some of the common differences between US and non-US resumes, to help international applicants determine how to best present themselves. Cultural workplace differences can be challenging, but learning how people communicate can be one of the most significant lessons for an international intern. The chapter discusses some of the additional obstacles international interns face. Including international students in an intern program helps promote workplace diversity. Museum visitors and staff benefited from hearing the intern present about the painting because the experience in the gallery was unique and authentic. Likewise, US museums have resources and expertise that can be useful to colleagues abroad.
