ABSTRACT

The charge of impressionism can certainly be levelled at the preceding collection, just as of any other anthology. Whole campaigns, intrigues, and rebellions have been disregarded. Genealogies have been purged of all but the most significant members in order to keep an uncomplicated picture before the reader. The alternative was not to tell all – that would have run to twenty volumes - but to recount other events while suppressing some of those included here. Anyone other than myself would have made a different selection, just as I might make another if the book were undertaken at another time. I have already given my explanations of the emphasis of the book in the Preface. To make up for the major lacunae, I here offer a selection of works to which the reader can refer.
