ABSTRACT

Since there were no direct descendants on the death of Otto III, the succession passed to the collateral line in Bavaria. There the ruling duke was Henry, son of Henry the Wrangler, grandson of Henry the younger brother of Otto the Great. After putting down various competitors, Duke Henry was crowned at Mainz on 7 June 1002. A ceremonial coronation at Aachen followed in September, and Henry was now accepted both inside and outside Germany as the new king.
