ABSTRACT

History has repeatedly shown that the fate of Shaolin is closely linked to that of the country. The rise and fall of Shaolin is based on the social and economic environment and the ruling regime’s religious policy. The development of Shaolin always follows the pattern of the dynastic cycle. Throughout history, Shaolin has enjoyed prosperity when the country was unified and at peace, but has never escaped the destruction and chaos brought about by the collapse of dynasties. Over the course of time, Shaolin Monastery has survived repeated destruction in rebellions, revolutions and wars. Historical writings, folk tales, martial arts manuals and wuxia stories produced in the past centuries have helped in the formation of a unique Shaolin culture. As a powerful item of cultural heritage, Shaolin has not only contributed to the construction of a national identity among the Chinese, but has also played its part in cultural exchanges between China and the international community and served the building of China’s national image.
