ABSTRACT

The smaller cycle of William includes the chansons in section XI other than the Chanson de Guillaume. The so-called “grand cycle” or “Geste de Garin de Monglane” seems to have developed around the William stories, filling in the family histories of William’s relatives and connecting them in large cyclic collections. Many mss. show clear evidence of having been compiled in ateliers. The term Geste de Monglane as a title refers to a subcategory of texts recounting the deeds of Garin’s sons [see items 2078–83]. Some scholars also speak of smaller cycles featuring Aymeri, Rainouart, or Vivien.
