ABSTRACT
A small cycle of poems evolved around Renaud, as did a hagiographic tradition [see items 178–87]. Renaud appears first as a rebellious vassal, but in the Renaissance works of Boiardo and Ariosto--and in Spanish romances--he is a peer and Roland’s close friend.
