ABSTRACT

(French poetry, 13th cent.) The story falls into 2 parts--Doon’s youth and his rebellion against Charles--the 2nd of which is thought to be older. Gui de Mayence accidentally kills a hermit while hunting and takes the hermit’s place to do penance; his seneschal kills one of his sons and imprisons his wife. Gui’s son Doon avenges these wrongs, when he is old enough, by killing the seneschal. Charlemagne, angered by this murder, makes war on Doon until an angel intervenes. Then Doon helps a baron named Aubrigant who is fighting the Danes. Aubrigant betrays him by imprisoning Doon’s fiancée. Doon frees her.
