ABSTRACT

Formal curricula-based theatre training is not available in Kolkata. Therefore, Kolkata group theatre practitioners are mostly self-taught or acquire the wherewithal of a performance vocabulary while on the job. The same holds true for the theatre technicians and designers where an apprenticeship model is in vogue. This chapter elucidates the various training strategies adapted by theatre practitioners in the Bengali Group Theatre. I demonstrate and argue that even though the significance of training is downplayed, they are important determinants of what is produced and how it is produced in Kolkata.
