ABSTRACT
This short conclusion summarises the argument of the book as a whole. Debates on kingship were central to the development of Greek political thought, and provide a richer illustration of the engagement between philosophers and other writers than the more one-sided surviving discussions of democracy. The figure of the king provided a means of thinking about the unity of the polis, of relating the polis to the cosmos and exploring the exemplary role of the virtuous individual.
