ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 documents Golden Bough Theater’s transformance in an endeavor to combat the bodily lethargy observed in (post)colonial and postmartial Taiwan. By adopting the logic and materiality of cultural hybridity, which originated from colonial encounters, Golden Bough forges energized bodies bursting with the charisma of popular culture. With reference to the creative process of The Lady Knight-Errant of Taiwan – Peh-sio-lan (台灣女俠白小蘭, Tai-oan Lu-kiap Peh-sio-kan) and Troy, Troy … Taiwan (祭特洛伊, Ji Teluoyi), the chapter argues that to make cultural hybridity sustainable as a method of transformance, it necessitates methodological innovation beyond the pragmatism of cultural hybridity.
