ABSTRACT

The inhabitant’s movements, rituals, and diurnal and nocturnal activities may shape interior spaces in response to patterns of use. Reading from the inside out, this chapter focuses on how human inhabitation governs form. It is organized around the personae of the detective, the psychoanalyst, and the maid. It examines Japanese tea houses, modernist domestic space, Sigmund Freud’s office, the French hôtel particulier, and Eileen Gray’s house, E1027.
