ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 takes stock of the major work in the field of classroom discourse. These studies mainly relate to discourse analysis, conversation analysis and the tenets of sociocultural theory. Together they map out the top-down architecture of classroom discourse and form the backdrop against which the corpus linguistics dimension will be added in the subsequent chapters.
