ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 focuses on the qualitative features of teacher talk for explaining language and giving instructions. Two areas of language are examined here: lexis and grammar. This will be viewed from the dual perspective of teacher talk as being both the means and the destination. For example, ‘what type of language do EFL teachers use to explain grammar?’, but also, ‘what grammar do they use to give language explanations or directives?’ Drawing on numerous extracts from CONNEcT, comparisons will be made between native and non-native teacher talk.
