ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 compares the linguistic patterns and discursive strategies identified in Chapter 3 with the patterns employed in the post-referendum period (2016–2018) in order to ascertain whether media discourse regarding EU migration has changed in the wake of the 2016 EU membership referendum. In particular, the analysis aims to trace the differences and similarities between the representation of Europe, European migrants, and migration within the EU after the 2016 referendum and compare these with the discourses constructed around EU migrants in 2013 and 2014. The comparative analysis thus brings to light the linguistic mechanisms that ensure that the ideologies promoted by different newspapers remain adaptable to the changing socio-political environment of contemporary Britain.
