ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the first portrait. We examine a school garden at a primary school in a large city in England. We explore how schools establish a garden, examining the reasoning for undertaking such an endeavour and the various stakeholders involved in the project. We examine how the garden development progresses, the way stakeholders are managed and, crucially, how the school set about funding the garden. We highlight the different ways the garden was framed as a solution to something – health, exposure to nature, food knowledge. We discuss the ways access to the garden was controlled and monitored. We explore the knowledges that children displayed in their conversations with us, and how these contrasted with adult perceptions of child knowledge.
