ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on textual analysis and interviews/focus groups, and discusses how students determine what to look for, and how to choose between a tightly controlled and structured approach and a loose, open one. Organic textual readings allow the data to modify the typology itself. The chapter presents about how students analyze qualitative data once they’ve gathered it. NVivo, a qualitative data analysis software package, is one of the most widely used tools in helping researchers create coding schemes and themes for large amounts of data. Not unlike the “search toolbar” on most websites, NVivo allows students to create their own coding categories and search conditions for those categories. The road to empowerment and the road to equality often diverge. Women of color experience femininity and oppression very differently than those of the dominant group, and in fact the third wave pointed out that many of the arguments made by feminists at the time simply weren’t as relevant to them.
